Starting off as just a birthday poster for a friend, it transformed into a semi-realistic, semi-cartoon like dragon. However, it was not just any dragon, it was a water dragon. While designing this for said close friend, I found some difficulties in creating a water-like vibe from the dragon itself. "Should I color it?"
"Maybe watercolor won't ruin it..." "Maybe I should just make it obvious that it is in the water." Thoughts like this overcame my mind for a long time before the estimated due date. It drove me "nuts" as one would say. In the end, I managed to find my answer. I should just add one characteristic of the sea. Kelp and seaweed. So, to incorporate the idea, I added the flow-y parts of the kelp/seaweed into the neck part of the dragon, changing the vibe completely. I finally got something that screamed "WATER!" I was proud. After the birthday poster was made, I redesigned it to look something like the picture above. The new design is what I am happy with and am sticking with before moving on to doing something else with this Water Dragon sketch.
